“Not stupid.” His voice was very gentle. “Just very, very young, ma petite. ”

“Dont be kind to me. I don’t deserve it. I fouled up everything. I hurt you.”

“And I hurt you. It would seem we’re even.”

“No, we’re not. It was all my—**

“Hush.” He stood up and came around the desk. ” Doucement. It’s all right.”

“It’s not all right.” She drew a deep, shaky breath. “And I do wish you’d stop being nice to me.”

A faint smile touched his lips as he leaned against the edge of the desk. “I’ll watch it in the future. Would you prefer I beat you or only cast you into the dungeon?”

“It’s not funny.”

“And it’s no tragedy. We can work this out, Mariana.”

“I know we can.” She straightened her shoulders and gestured to the papers in front of her. “I’ve been thinking about it. I’ve changed and initialed the contracts to give you fifty percent of the gross and full control of the—What are you laughing at?”

“You.” A smile lingered on his lips. “Are we back to Muggins?”

“What else can I give you? It’s the most valuable thing I own.”

“You’re wrong.” A brilliant smile lit his face. “You forget you’re carrying my child.”

She couldn’t look away from him. He showed no cynicism or bitterness, just warmth and glowing tenderness. “I couldn’t give up my baby.”

“No?” He brushed back the unruly curls at her temple with a gossamer-light touch.

“You look scarcely more than a child yourself.”

“I’ll be a very good mother,” she said earnestly. “I probably seem thoughtless and impulsive but I’m—”

“Scarcely ‘thoughtless.’” He wound a curl on his index finger. “We came together because you put too much thought into this. I learned a long time ago instinct can often be a better guide than cold analysis.”

“You’re not cold.”

“Many people would not agree with you.”

“You’re very generous and giving with your friends.”

He smiled. “And I would be equally generous and giving to my child.”

“You like children?”

“Very much. Childhood has always seemed a magical, mysterious time to me.” A flicker of wist-fulness crossed his face. He shrugged. “But then that which we’ve never had always seems more exotic and desirable.”

And he had been robbed of his own childhood, in the crudest way possible. She suddenly wanted to reach out and comfort him, cuddle him, as she had done last night when he was in pain.

“You’re willing to share your Muggins.” His tone was coaxing as he gently pulled on the curl. “Would it be so much harder to share our baby?”

“Impossible.”

“Nothing is impossible.” He grimaced. “As you’ve given me ample evidence in the last few days. Stay here and—”

“I cant stay here. I have to go home to Sedikhan.”

“Why?”

She searched wildly for an answer he would accept, but only came up with, “My laboratory is there.”

“I’ll build you one here. Better still. I’ll build you one at my place in Connecticut. I spend more time there and I’d rather have the two of you nearby.”

“I’d rather go back to Sedikhan. I’m not used to being away from the Compound.
